Chevy considers return of Camaro as electric muscle car
Chevrolet may be reviving the Camaro as an electric car. The company’s boss wants to bring back the famous muscle car as a fun, accessible, and affordable car.
The sixth generation of the Chevrolet Camaro discontinued last year without too much fanfare. This seemingly marked the final end of one of the best-known members of the American muscle car family. And this at a time when muscle cars are not doing too well anyway. Not only the Camaro, but also the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger and Chrysler 300 all have their farewell parties in 2024.
But it won’t necessarily be the Camaro’s real farewell. Although General Motors (the parent company behind Chevrolet) currently has no concrete plans to revive the Camaro, chief executive Mark Reuss is not ruling out a comeback either. It would be in a new way, though. An electric way.
Camaro should become fun and accessible again
Indeed, Reuss tells MotorTrend that he has a specific vision for the Camaro. According to him, the car should go back to its roots as a car that is of interest to everyone. Not just for speed freaks and diesel fanatics, but also just for people who want a fun car for everyday use. That, according to Reuss, should succeed with a cheaper model and, above all, by making the car electric.
After production of the Camaro came to an end, several outlets already speculated that Chevrolet would revive the name as an SUV or hybrid, but Reuss wants no part of that. According to him, a car bearing the Camaro name should also pay tribute to the brand’s history. The car once began as an accessible model that everyone wanted to drive. A car that with a little saving you could have as your first car of your own. And that, according to Reuss, should be the goal again with a new Camaro model.
Eternal rivalry with the Ford Mustang
It is no coincidence that Reuss and General Motors seem open to a return of the Camaro. After all, the model was once created to rival the Ford Mustang. And let the Mustang be the sole survivor of the big names within American muscle cars. But the latest model Mustang (the Mach-E) has also received a major makeover. That is now an all-electric crossover with four doors and a roof high enough to actually sit under.
And in all likelihood, Chevrolet is going to try to fight that old battle again. That was exactly why the Camaro was raised from the dead before, in 2010. The Mustang did just a little too well then, and so the Camaro came back with a new generation. Now the Mach-E is doing pretty okay in a saturated market, so there is an opportunity for Chevy to dig up the hatchet once again.
Either way, it’s going to be a while before we start seeing a new all-electric Camaro. General Motors is currently busy developing and scaling up its electric powertrain. Only when that is at the desired level will the company be able to consider the return of the iconic muscle car.
